Program details

Discover one of Europe's most beautiful hidden gems with a wander around Vilnius Old Town and the nearby bohemian Uzupis neighbourhood. The largest surviving mediaeval old town in Northern Europe, Vilnius’s meandering streets have been beautifully restored, with over 2,000 buildings to explore. Nearby Uzupis is eclectic and gritty, home to a rag-tag crew of artists, free spirits and oddballs who declared their neighbourhood an independent republic in 1998, although only they recognise it.

Take a stroll down bustling Pilies Street in the heart of the Old Town, where pavement cafés and market stalls add to the lively atmosphere. Admire the beautiful cathedral and visit the Gate of Dawn, a 16th century entrance into the city, which now houses one of the holiest icons in Polish Catholicism, as well as Napoleon's favourite church. Then head to Uzupis to pick up some tips on declaring your own republic from the charming locals. They have their own president, anthem and flag, and even celebrate their unofficial independence every April Fool’s Day.

On your adventure, sample the local delicacy of smoked or dried fish from Lithuanian waters, pick up some souvenirs at the Vilnius Potters Guild and finish up with a Lithuanian beer in a peaceful spot where you can watch the world go by. Find out why the capital of Lithuania is one of Europe's best-kept secrets with a walking tour of the beautiful city of Vilnius.
