The Chinese began moving to Taiwan four centuries ago and supplanted the island’s aboriginal tribes to the point where today they make up just 2% of the population. Ethnically and linguistically different, many still live in mountain villages such as Wulai, home of the Tai Ya tribe. This half-day tour will take you into the heart of their world.
Located in the northern highlands, Wulai is famous for hot springs, trail train, waterfalls and Yushian Amusement Park as well as the beautiful scenery formed by the high mountains and running rivers. Wulai means hot springs in one of the aboriginal languages, and these are highly sought after. They are clear, transparent, colourless and odourless, and a hot spring spa is effective in healing dermatitis.
An 80-metre-high waterfall that looks like a white silk cloth coming down from the sky is also a must-see while the sightseeing trail train is one of Wulai’s most romantic attractions. The aboriginal folk centre introduces the culture, customs and habits of Tai Ya tribe and exhibits historical artefacts. The highlight of this visit is the enchanting aboriginal singing and dancing show. It tells the story of the birth of the Atayal tribe, which according to legend owes its origins to the explosion of a giant rock in Mount Dabajian. When the rock exploded with a loud crash, it gave birth to a man and a woman who then began the tribe.
