Program details

Discover the monumental but compact city of Nara, site of the legendary eight Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara, with this enthralling half-day walking tour from Kyoto. In 1998 Unesco designated the Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara a World Heritage Site, and the reasons for doing so will become abundantly clear as this 4.5km walking route unfolds.

Apart from temples and parks, whose beauty will leave you open-mouthed, you will have the opportunity to mingle among deer roaming freely in a primeval forest and stand in awe of majestic and imposing pagodas. The itinerary takes in the Todaiji Temple, one of the largest wooden structures in the world and renowned for its enormous bronze image of Buddha. Weighing in at over 500 tonnes and at almost 15 metres in height, it rarely fails to impress.

Next we visit the natural wonder that is the Nara Park (Deer Park) and wander among the 1,100 or so tame deer that roam about the grounds. These graceful animals are considered to be divine messengers of the Shinto gods that inhabit the shrine and the surrounding mountainous terrain.

Then we contemplate the striking Kofukuji Temple; transferred to this location from Kyoto in the year 710, its five-story pagoda, dating from 1426, is the second highest in Japan.
The ingenuity of man and the simple beauty of nature combine in perfect harmony on this unforgettable introduction to Nara.
