The Golden Triangle used to be one of Asia's main opium-producing areas. During this day trip you will learn about the use and cultivation of opium and about the opium trade. The Hall of Opium is one of the best museums of Thailand. You will also visit Doi Tung with its stunning scenery, magnificent gardens and beautiful Royal Villa.

Your guide and driver will meet you at the hotel. Drive to Doi Tung where we will spend the morning. You will learn about the history of Doi Tung and the development projects initiated by the late Princess Mother (the mother of the present king) to eradicate opium cultivation on the mountain. You will visit the magnificent Mae Fah Luang (local people used to call the Princess Mother ‘Mae Fah Luang’) Botanical Gardens. You will also visit the Royal Villa, the summer residence of the Princess Mother, now a museum and displaying her work to improve the life quality of local tribal people. Enjoy the gorgeous views over the surrounding lowlands. Time for lunch in the restaurant on Doi Tung.

We continue to the famous Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet. Here we will visit the Hall of Opium, a marvelous museum that tells the story of the opium trade and the many uses of opium over time. It is now time to drive back to Chiang Rai.
