Program details

Meet Santa Maria de Tule’s most famous, favourite and much loved resident, the Tule Tree. Gaze in awe upon this marvellous natural wonder, letting your eyes wander along its tangle twisting roots and branches. With a trunk circumference of 42 metres and diameter of 14 metres, Tule’s tree is a truly colossal specimen. A typical species of the swampy areas that surround this region, the ancients called the tree Ahueheute, meaning The Old of the Water.

Following your encounter with this gentle arboreal giant, you will continue to the small and picturesque village of Teatitlan del Valle. Here you can observe as local artisans demonstrate the elaborate and intricate process of throwing a typical Mexican rug. Stroll the quiet, enchanting streets of the town, and take time to make any purchases you desire along the way.

Architectural treasures await you at the next stop, the archaeological zone of Mitla. Witness a number of recovered architectonic ‘groups’ of artefacts, paying special attention to the impressive ‘North Group’ of columns, which formed part of a catholic temple dedicated to San Pablo. Since the first temple was destroyed, this once revered building has been carefully restored on the same foundations and using pieces of the original structure, making it a reborn product of its own destruction.
