Uncover the hidden secrets of one of the earliest cities of Mesoamerica. The closet archaeologist, or anyone with an interest in Mexico’s rich culture and history, need look no further than Monte Albán in the southern state of Oaxaca. Perched atop a low mountain range, this fabulous collection of ancient ruins is a mere 9km from the city of Oaxaca. The site’s civic centre is home to timeless monuments and sits atop an artificially levelled ridge, some 1940 metres above the valley floor below.
A stunning view of several hundred artificial terraces and more than a dozen clusters of interesting architecture dot the surrounding hilltops and ridgelines. World-class archaeological ruins on the nearby Atzompa and El Gallo hills to the north were also traditionally considered to be an integral part of the ancient city.
Learn about this city’s status as a socio-political and economic hub for thousands of years. Reflect on the mystery surrounding its name – was it colonial-era reference to the famous Spanish soldier Montalban, or to the Alban Hills of Italy?
