Wander in wonder through the fascinating Art Gallery of Ontario, one of the largest art museums in North America. Located in the heart of the downtown area, the museum has over 45,000 square metres of space, with a massive collection of over 80,000 works dating from the first century to the present day, together with one of the very best programmes of visiting exhibitions to be found anywhere in the world.

Founded in 1900 by a group of private citizens, the museum has seen four major expansions since 1974, whose scope and ambition have turned the museum into an incredible resource for the entire city, with not only the galleries but many other facilities inside. There is an extensive library, along with workshop spaces for artists, learning spaces for visiting students, restaurants and cafés, a theatre and lecture hall a gift shop designed by the renowned architect Frank Gehry and an event space occupying all of the third floor.

The museum holds the world's largest collection of Canadian art, with native and Inuit creativity strongly represented in the works of artists such as Kenojuak Ashevak, Norval Morrisseau and Jackson Beardy. But there's plenty of European work as well, with artists such as Tintoretto, Reubens, Rembrandt and Monet represented alongside the behemoths of the Americas, such as Kline, Rothko and O'Keeffe. No art lover should leave Toronto without experiencing this world-class museum in person, and discovering why Toronto goes mad for the Art Gallery of Ontario.
