Just 11km away from Jaipur is Amer, the former citadel of the rajas of Jaipur. This museum-like village is dominated by the Amber Fort, one of the finest examples of Rajput architecture, which was built by Raja Man Singh more than four centuries ago. It was constructed with marble and red sandstone thus giving it its distinctive dark pink hue. Wander the palace and admire its great structures such as the Hall of Public Audience, the Hall of Private Audience and the private chambers of the queens, where the windows have latticed screens so that the ladies could watch the proceedings at the royal court in privacy. There is also the Temple of Victory with its famed the Hall of Mirrors.

Continue to Jaipur and visit the City Palace Museum, the former royal residence. See the Armoury, which houses an impressive array of pistols, blunderbusses, flintlocks, swords, rifles and daggers. Drive past Hawa Mahal, Jaipur’s most famous landmark. This façade of sandstone screens was constructed so that the ladies of the palace could watch the royal processions without being seen by outsiders. Visit the Jantar Mantar, the largest stone observatory in the world.
