Program details

Dig up the delights of Dainzu and Yagul, two remarkable Zapotec archaeological sites on the eastern side of the central valleys of Oaxaca. Delve deep into Oaxaca’s past, beginning at ancient Dianzu. This impressive site sits in contrast to the more contemporary developments of nearby Monte Alban and Mitla. A window into Mexican history, Dianzu offers up unique archeological treasures of high artistic quality, setting itself apart from other sites in the area.

Discover the different buildings and galleries, witnessing some of the finest examples of ancient Mexican art and architecture still visible today. After the orientation tour of Dianzu move to Yagul, an intriguing maze of low lying ruins and a former city-state associated with the Zapotec civilization of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. The site is considered to be highly precious and was declared one of four Natural Monuments in Mexico in 1998.

Known locally as Pueblo Viejo or ‘Old Village’, Yagul was formerly occupied during the Spanish Conquest. During the occupation, the people of Yagul were moved to the nearby modern town of Tlacolula, about 20km southeast of Oaxaca city, where their descendants can still be found today. Hear the fascinating history of this region as you travel through it with your knowledgeable guide for a true introduction to the Oaxaca of old.
