Our walking tour starts with the visit of the beautiful gothic Church of Basilica of St. Claire next to the medieval city walls of Assisi (XII-XIV century). The Church enshrines the burial place of St. Clare, disciple of St. Francis and first woman in Europe to write the rule of life for a new religious order, and the Crucifix of St. Damian, a rare example of the Byzantine iconography of the "Triumphant Christ". We will proceed to the Home of St. Francis (Chiesa Nuova) where, in a small medieval room, Francis was imprisoned by his father after his conversion. We will reach Piazza del Comune, the main square to admire the Temple of Minerva, one of the most beautiful and well preserved Roman temples in Italy. We will end with the visit to Basilica of St. Francis, the incomparable shrine of medieval art and spirituality. The masterpieces of Cimabue, Giotto, Lorenzetti and many others, make of this Church a real encyclopedia of the best of italian artists of the XIIIth and XIVth century. The tomb of St. Francis, visited by millions every year is one of the most important Christian pilgrimage places in the world.
