Program details

Downtown is the beating heart of New York and where you’ll find the most happening and interesting neighbourhoods during this Downtown walking tour in German. Explore oh-so-chic SoHo, the vibrant Chinatown, the remnants of Little Italy and the picturesque bohemian enclave of The Village, each with its own particular characteristics.

SoHo’s current incarnation as a hip and trendy artists’ colony is but the latest transformation it has experienced. Over the decades it has been a quiet residential area, an entertainment district, an industrial and commercial hub, and something of an urban wasteland. Each era has left a legacy and all combine to create today’s SoHo. Learn all about the cast-iron architecture dating from the mid-19th century, of which SoHo boasts the largest collection in the world.

Most of the areas once overwhelmingly inhabited by Italians, Irish, Poles, Germans, Jews et al are no more but one area has always been solidly inhabited by the same ethnic group. Chinatown is a feast of the senses in every sense, from the scents of Cantonese cuisine wafting through the air to the blur of hi-tech and leather goods. Immerse yourself in this Oriental outpost and feel like you are in China itself.

The fabled Little Italy has progressively faded to the area around Mulberry Street, which is still packed with restaurants but the area still retains the rustic charms of yesteryear.

Greenwich Village, popularly known as The Village, was the original artists’ Bohemia but is now far too upscale. Explore its beautiful brownstones streets, which have quite a few stories to tell.

Meeting/pick-up point: Madame Tussauds (42nd Street).
Duration: Two hours.
Start/opening time: Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10am.
