Program details

Santorini’s caldera is one of the Mediterranean’s greatest natural marvels. So you’d be mad not to cruise around its waters and volcanic islets. The caldera was caused by a massive volcanic implosion thousands of years ago. It destroyed much of what was then one island, leaving in its place four islands: Santorini, Therasia, Nea Kameni and Palia Kameni. This catastrophe explains why Santorini itself has such sheer cliffs and why the islands form a circle. On this morning cruise, you’ll climb aboard a traditional wooden sailboat to cruise to the Kamenis, the two uninhabited lava islands that rise up from the caldera. Hike up to Nea Kameni’s crater, striding over warm lava to see its steamy fumes and drink in the views over this unforgiving yet captivating landscape. Next you’ll cruise to the thermal springs of Palea Kameni, where you will have the chance to swim in the mineral rich waters, which can reach temperatures of 35 degrees. Then it’s back on the boat to cruise along the coast, where whitewashed houses are perched high above the caldera’s northern edges. Before you return to the port, there will be time to admire the views from the beach as you tuck into a snack and water on board.
