Program details

Journey back in time to discover one of the most extraordinary man-made complexes you will set eyes on in Latin America. Located on the northern coasts of Peru, in the exotic region of Trujillo, the Chan Chan complex is the largest adobe city in the world. The sprawling size of it and its near perfect conservation has earned it Unesco World Heritage Site status.

In the ancient, bygone days of the Chimu Empire, Chan Chan used to be the capital of this great people. Explore the magnificent citadel that protected many a Chimu from foreign attacks in days of old. Thanks to a knowledgeable guide, you will learn all about the history, even the myths and stories that these adobe walls have witnessed throughout the passing of time.

Near Chan Chan, find the Huaca del Dragon, a huge adobe religious monument covered in symbolic illustrations. Its relief portrays human figures underneath what experts have agreed is a rainbow. Hence it is also known as Huaca del Arco Iris – ‘Huaca of the Rainbow’.

Complete your day of ancient Peruvian culture with a stroll over to the beach of Huanchaco. This coast is renowned around the world for its famous ‘caballitos de totora’, a collection of curious boats made entirely out of straw. Thought to have been invented more than a thousand years ago, locals still use them for fishing. By the end of the day, you will be an expert in the history of Peru.
