Program details

Discover the magnificent archaeological complex of Tucume in this four-hour-guided tour from Chiclayo. You’ll find dozens of adobe mud-brick pyramids built around the sacred mountain of La Raya. The whole area still conserves a powerful presence and your guide will provide you with plenty of fascinating local legends and lore about this sacred site.

After an early start, we’ll head inland, our destination the ruins of the city of Tucume, situated south of the La Leche River on a plain around La Raya Mountain. The whole area covers around 220 hectares and encompasses 26 major pyramids and mounds, as well as many other lesser structures including plazas, walls, patios and irrigation canals. The site is believed to have been a major regional centre, witnessing occupations by successive waves of conquerors, culminating in the Inca Empire before it, too, was overrun. Explore the ruins and climb to the lookout point for some stunning vistas over the whole site and the surrounding countryside.

Your guide will tell you how the area is still highly respected and feared by the local people, how shamans invoke the power of Tucume and La Raya Mountain in their rituals, and how even now, very few dare to venture out in the site after dark.

You will also have the opportunity to visit the site’s museum where many of the artefacts found here are housed. You will get to meet some of the people, visiting textile and pottery workshops and trying the local cuisine.
