Description of the tour
Travel into the history of one of the most beautiful cities of the world and discover the most famous monuments of Venice. Meet your private guide in front of the impressive Basilica of San Marco in the St. Mark's Square, at the very heart of the city. Learn more about the Republic of Venice and about how it became dominant in the past. Did you know that Venice was originally built on a group of 117 small islands separated by canals?
Step inside the Basilica to admire its beautiful mosaics, the statues, amazing glass, and carvings, as well as the famous Pala d'Oro altarpiece, decorated with thousands precious stones.
Then stop by the nearby Clock Tower (Campanile) before continuing on to the Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale), an impressive Gothic palace dating back to the 14th century, which displays masterpieces by Tintoretto, Titian and Veronese. It was once the residence of the Doge, the elected ruler of the city. Walk through the eerie, narrow passageways towards the prison cells whilst learning about the prisoners and of course, Casanova, perhaps Venice's most famous and intriguing escapee. From there, take a moment to admire the famous Bridge of Sighs, connecting the palace to the New Prison. Its name comes from the fact that the convicts were forced in the past to enter the prison through this bridge. According to the legend when they had their last glimpse of Venice, they would let out a sigh. The tour ends with the Bridge of Sighs, the perfect spot to take a picture of the iconic scenery.
