Description of the tour
You will meet your guide in the small Campo S. Maria del Giglio where you will catch a gondola across the Grand Canal in order to reach Dorsoduro district. There you will visit the most famous baroque church of Venice: Santa Maria della Salute. The church, a thanksgiving for the end of the 1630’s black plague, was built in Istrian marble and marmorino ("little marble," actually bricks coated in marble dust) with exuberant volutes, scrolls, and more than 125 statues outside and with paintings by Titian and Tintoretto inside. Passing by the house of Peggy Guggenheim, today an excellent modern art museum, you continue towards the Zattere, one of the most popular promenade in Venice, to reach an ancient gondola boatyard where the Venetian gondolas are still made. Then, you will admire the medieval Church of the Carmelites in Campo Santa Margherita before visiting the Church of San Sebastiano, a must see not only because Veronese painted most of the interior (walls, ceiling, altars, organ and sacristy), but also because here you will find his tomb and his bust sculpted by Matteo Cornero. San Sebastiano can thus be considered as the Church of Veronese with more than 100 works of art painted by this artist, but you will have the surprise to discover here also paintings by Tintoretto and Titian. The tour finishes at San Sebastiano.
