Il programma nel dettaglio

Harlem is where Fifth Avenue and Park Avenue are no longer paved in gold but its wealth can be found in its people – and where better to start off than at church. Gospel music is guaranteed to lift your spirits but the salvation of your soul will have to be worked out between you and the Big Man. Then come back to earth and feel it move under your feet. Since this isn’t California, it must be the bass from the Hip Hop music on Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard.

The Boulevard, or 125th Street as it is otherwise known, is considered to be the Main Street of Harlem and features notable buildings including the Apollo Theatre, the Adam Clayton Powell Jr State Office Building, the Hotel Theresa, the Studio Museum, the Harlem Children's Zone, the Church of St. Joseph of the Holy Family, and the former West End Theatre, now home to the La Gree Baptist Church. On Malcolm X Boulevard, you'll see lines of tourists waiting to get into the legendary Sylvia's diner to eat soul food. But better things are in store.

Head to Striver's Row to explorethe three rows of townhouses in western Harlem, which are collectively recognised as a gem of New York City architecture. Marvel at the buildings in Sugar Hill, the area which gained its name in the 1920s when the locale became a popular place for wealthy African-Americans to live during the Harlem Renaissance. You may find, however, the earthier dilapidated neighbourhoods are just as interesting. This walking tour of Harlem will lift to a higher place!
