What To Expect

Meet your guide in the piazza in front of the Church of Gesù Nuovo in Naples' historic center. Learn how the building's original purpose as a private palace for the Prince of Salerno explains its strange-looking facade. Compare the austere exterior with the ornately-decorated Renaissance and Baroque interior, featuring works of art by Luca Giordano, Francesco Solimenta, and Cosimo Fanzago.

Stroll along the famous street known as 'Spaccanapoli' to reach the next stop on the tour. This ancient Roman street cuts through the center of the old city, which is where it gets its nickname, though the actual street name is Via Benedetto Croce. Take in the sights, sounds, and smells along this busy road. The small Sansevero Chapel was built for Raimondo di Sangro, Prince of Sansevero, and is home to the exquisitely-carved 'Veiled Christ' statue by Giuseppe Sanmartino at its center. Don't miss a look at the so-called 'Anatomical Machines' in the tiny room downstairs.

Continue along Spaccanapoli to reach Via Duomo, on which sits the main cathedral of the city. Head inside the 13th-century church to see a statue of San Gennaro, Naples' patron saint. Hear about the three times each year a vial of the saint's blood is brought out to see if it liquefies – signifying prosperity and safety for Naples. Look for other works of art in the Duomo, including 4th-century mosaics. The oldest church in Naples, the 4th-century Basilica Santa Restituta, is next to the Duomo and has ancient Greek and Roman ruins underneath it.

Enjoy a sweet bite to complete the tour with a sample of two of Naples' favorite pastries – the 'Sfogliatella' and 'Babà.' The former is a flaky shell-shaped pastry with a filling of sweetened ricotta, the latter is a small cake saturated with liquor (typically rum).
