Day 2 Rome

This morning, we will have a sightseeing tour of Rome whisking through the city’s most important neighbourhoods and sites, from the ancient to the modern.  We will hear fascinating stories about the Colosseum and see the Arch of Constantine and the Forum, once the administration, business and commercial center of Ancient Rome. We will continue to the Piazza del Campidoglio designed by Michelangelo, the Palazzo Venezia, the headquarters of the Fascist party and Mussolini, as well as the Vittoriano, a huge monument dedicated to the first Italian King, Vittorio Emanuele II. Of course we will admire the famous Trevi fountain ad will explore the Spanish Steps area before we quickly reach one of the most famous balconies of Rome, Pincio Terrace. From here, you can see above Piazza del Popolo, one of the most elegant squares in Rome, with its obelisk, the Twin Churches. Remainder of the day is yours. You are well placed to explore Rome further at your own pace today. Take a coffee in the famous Caffe Greco, once the haunt of Keats, Byron and Wagner, walk along the window shops in the Via Condotti for some of the finest clothes you will find anywhere, or simply wander where your feets take you stopping off where you wish. Dinner and overnight stay in Rome.

Day 3 Rome

Today, we will discover a treasure trove of art, history and religion: the Vatican. The Vatican Museum’s art collection, one the most important in the world, houses the wealthiest privately owned collection of masterpieces, showcased in rooms with walls decorated by Raffaello.  The real masterpiece, however, is next door: Michelangelo’s painting of the Sistine Chapel, which revolutionized the world’s idea of art. The Sistine chapel is still shaping the future of the Papacy: this is where the cardinals lock themselves in to elect a new Pope after the former one has passed away. Our Vatican tour ends with the tour of St. Peter’s Basilica, the largest church in the world.  The magnificent and breath-taking complex spans back to 4th century BC, when it was commissioned by Emperor Constantine, though the new cathedral took over 100 years and all of Italy’s greatest artists to build. We will admire here Michelangelo’s Cupola, his famous Pietà and Bernini’s amazing bronze Baldacchino.  Dinner and overnight stay in Rome

Day 4 Ariccia, Gandolfo, Frascati

Enjoy a relaxing journey through the wonderful scenery of the Castelli Romani, the Lazio region’s easy-on-the-eye winemaking area. While its name hints at an abundance of Roman castles, Castelli Romani is actually a collection of 13 extremely scenic villages in the Alban Hills, punctuated by volcanic lakes and secluded valleys.  Our first sop is Ariccia, where we will see the majestic Chigi palace and Assunta Church, masterpieces of the Baroque period.  We continue on to the historic centre of Castel Gandolfo. Watching over the picturesque Lake Albano, the town is home to numerous gems including the Pope’s summer residence and the Collegiate Church of St Thomas of Villanova. The next visit is Frascati, well known for its Tuscolane Villas, where arise elegant buildings in the past used by nobles families of Lazio. We will Visit a spectacular Roman Catholic cathedral, dedicated to Saint Peter the Apostle and the imposing Bishop’s Palace which boasts a trio of impressive towers. We’ll also witness the Bell Tower of San Rocco, the only remaining part of the town’s charming medieval quarter, which was largely destroyed during the Second World War. In the beautiful park of Villa Torlonia you’ll find stunning Baroque terraced gardens and fountains. We head to the oldest winery in Castelli Romani, Santa Benedetta. After a guided tour of the rustic estate with explanations about the winemaking traditions we will enjoy a wine-tasting session, sampling important Santa Benedetta wines accompanied by a plate of local delicacies, including the winery’s extra virgin olive oil, bruschetta (pane di Lariano, an aromatic, crusty white bread), cheeses and cured meats. Return for dinner and overnight stay in Rome.
