Travel back in time with a visit to charming and historical Lampang. Mass tourism hasn’t reached this gateway to Northern Thailand, allowing you to step into the world of Thailanders today and centuries ago. These locals also have trunks: elephants. For years, the massive elephants’ brute strength was used to drag teak wood from the forest for the region’s important logging industry. Today the elephants enjoy a more leisurely life at the Lampang Elephant Conservation Centre. Located in a lush forest, the center is home to more than 50 Asian elephants, including some of the King’s white elephants. The elephants aren’t exploited as they often were in the logging industry. We’ll see an hour-long demonstration of their historical uses. This pioneering animal sanctuary and science center has conducted research into the locomotion of these gigantic yet graceful animals. Our animal adventures aren’t over. We will tour Lampang’s city centre in horse-drawn carriages, just as the locals do. No need for a bus or tuk-tuk. Carriages are a regular means of transportation in traditional Lampang. Clomping along we’ll take in a city that has retained much of its old-fashioned architectural allure. No skyscrapers in sight! Inside the ancient city, we’ll admire the traditional Lanna architecture and murals at the of the Wat Phra That Lampang Luang temple. We’ll also stop at the Wat Phra Kaew Don Tao temple on the west bank of the Wang River. The famous Emerald Buddha was housed here in the 15th century.
