Travel back from modern times to the blackest days of the Second World War and further, to the medieval period, with this fascinating day trip to Luxembourg. Learn about the terrible loss of life in 1944 at Bastogne and the Mardasson Memorial, and then travel into the city of Luxembourg itself to discover over 1000 years of history in the streets all around.

Your first stop is at Bastogne, the site of the worst battle between the American and German forces at Christmas in 1944. Part of the larger Battle of the Bulge, Bastogne Siege lasted seven days, while the Germans attempted to wrest control of this strategic location from the Allies. Although General Patton's troops arrived in time to ensure an Allied victory, that Christmas saw the death of over 3,000 men. Nowadays a leafy and peaceful spot in the Luxembourg countryside, Bastogne's past is commemorated at the Mardasson Memorial, a five-pointed star-shaped structure designed by the architect Georges Dedoyard to honour the memory of nearly 80,000 American soldiers killed, wounded or missing in the Battle of the Bulge.

Then travel on to the city of Luxembourg itself, capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The settlement was established by the Franks in the early Middle Ages, who left their mark in the form of a beautiful old city centre of winding streets and timbered buildings. But Luxembourg is a city of the future as well, housing several European Union institutions including the European Court of Justice and the European Investment Bank. Enjoy a day of exploring Luxembourg old and new, remembering the lowest point of the war and celebrate the forward-looking, hopeful attitudes of modern Luxembourg.
