Stockholm. 14 islands, two bodies of water and 57 bridges. Let’s leave the city of Stockholm behind and head out to the countryside. Along one of these two bodies of water, the fresh water Lake Mälaren, we find both Drottningholm Palace and Sigtuna.

Drottningholm Palace is one of 10 palaces that the Royal Family of Sweden have at their disposal. It is also known as the palace where the King and Queen actually live and where their three kids, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Carl-Philip and Princess Madeleine have grown up. Drottningholm is the most well-preserved royal palace built in the 1600s in Sweden and at the same time it is representative of all European architecture of the period. Drottningholm is also found on UNESCO’s World Heritage list.

Sigtuna is not only the smallest town in Sweden it is also the oldest preserved town, founded AD980. The town is a popular outing for foreigners and Swedes alike. The charming wooden houses in different colours along the main street, the church ruins, the runic stones and the lovely view of lake Mälaren makes Sigtuna a popular destination. In Sigtuna you also find some of the very best cinnamon buns in Sweden, why many people stop of for a traditional Swedish Fika.
