Magnificent Munich is today one of Europe’s most prosperous and beautiful cities but it will be forever associated with being the birthplace of the Nazi party and where it began its rise to power as this tour reveals. But the city was also where the most grassroot of opposition movements to Hitler sprung up: the idealistic students of the White Rose movement. This tour takes you to many of the locations in Munich associated with the Nazis and the White Rose.

Hitler considered Munich to be the ‘Capital of the Movement’ and despite the ravages of war and the subsequent denazification, which saw many Nazi monuments destroyed, the city still has a number of significant reminders of the era in the Maxvorstadt district such as the Führerbau, the Hofbräuhaus and Feldherrnhalle, and the university.

The Führerbau in the Briener Strasse was where Hitler had his office (today a musical college rehearsal room) and where the notorious Munich Agreement promising ‘peace in our time’ was signed. It was from here that the Nazis plotted their takeover of Germany.

The Hofbräuhaus beer hall was where, in 1920, Hitler announced his 25-point programme that amounted to the establishment of the Nazi party while the Feldherrnhalle was where the Nazis and the Bavarian police had the armed confrontation in the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch.

Visit the Ludwig Maximilian University, where during the war pacifist siblings Hans and Sophie Scholl’s White Rose movement disseminated anti-Nazi leaflets before being caught and executed. See also the bullet-scarred walls known as the Wounds of Remembering, a haunting reminder of the past.
