For 117 years, this beautiful island was the last place in the world you would want to be sent to. San Lucas housed a brutal prison, often compared to Devil's Island where the worst prisoners would be sent. Finally closed in 1992, the island has not been open to the public, allowing the island to stage a rapid recovery from the years of abuse when it was a penal colony. Now, opened on a limited basis San Lucas is the first place you should want to visit. Tour the abandoned prison, and enjoy the tranquility of the rest of this beautiful island. In the afternoon, enjoy a few hours on one of the most picturesque beaches in Costa Rica. The air conditioned bus leaves San Jose in the morning, and heads out to Puntarenas, passing through a variety of interesting landscapes. Your journey to San Lucas is on board the Paradise a luxurious motor yacht. You will be given a guided tour of the old prison buildings and the bi-lingual guides will explain some of the infamous past. After enjoying a freshly prepared lunch we will walk to Playa el Coco and you will spend a few hours enjoying this beautiful natural beach. On the way home we will sail to the south of the island for a gentle cruise with views of the many other islands as the sun slowly sets behind the hills to the west. The tour is only available on Sundays.
