Day 2:

LHASA
Explore the 'Place of the Gods' as we visit Lhasa, the capital of Tibet and one of the highest cities in the world.

We visit its major tourist attraction, the red-and-white Potala Palace which once served as the winter home of the Dalai Lama. Today, this magnificent building has been converted into a museum with exhibits of dazzling golden stupas, thangkas (paintings on silk, usually depicting a Buddhist scene) and other impressive examples of Tibetan Buddhist art. The entire structure is spread over thirteen levels and contains 1,000 rooms and 10,000 shrines.

Next, we proceed to Jokhang Temple which houses the most revered golden Buddha in Tibet. The ornate design of this shrine has drawn abundant Buddhist pilgrims over the years and created a well-trodden path around the temple in an area known as Barkhor Street.

We take a stroll down this ancient thoroughfare which is flanked with shops selling local items, such as prayer wheels and clothing. Pilgrims today continue to follow this stone pathway.

Breakfast is at the hotel.
Overnight at Lhassa Thangka Hotel or similar.

Day 3:

LHASA
Discover Lhasa’s rich Buddhist roots which has ensured that the city has remained at the centre of Tibetan Buddhism for over a millennium.

First we visit Drepung Monastery, as Tibet’s largest monastery and one of Lhasa’s great three gompas, there is plenty to explore at Drepung Monastery.

Founded in 1416 by Jamyang Choge Tashi Palden and sat at the foot of the Gambo Utse Mountain, the site was home to the Dalai Lamas until the seventeenth century and at its height housed up to almost eight thousand monks. Within its vast 250,000 square metre expanse lies the Ganden Palace and the main assembly hall, the Tsokchen Lhakhang, which is richly decorated and supported by 183 large stone pillars.

Afterwards, we head to Sera Monastery, a serene sanctuary situated at the foot of Tatipu Hill and one of Lhasa’s most famous monasteries.

Breakfast is at the hotel.
Overnight at Lhassa Thangka Hotel or similar.

Day 4:

LHASA/GYANTSE/SHIGATSE (370KM)
Our exceptional tour takes in architectural splendour and a superb panorama of a natural wonderland.

On the way we pass the famous Yamdrok Lake. This turquoise coloured freshwater lake is framed by snow-capped mountains and it is one of three sacred lakes in Tibet.

Next, we proceed to Pelkor Chode Monastery which is enclosed by a red wall. The complex has an interesting architectural style since it combines Tibetan, Han and Nepal architecture styles and this monastery also has significance as three different Tibetan sects reside in this sanctuary.
Breakfast is at the hotel.
Overnight at Shigatse Shiga Yangcha Hotel or similar.

Day 5:

SHIGATSE / EVEREST BASE CAMP (340 KM)
As we’re driving to Shegar, if weather is clear enough, we can view the Mt.Everest in the distance on the way.

Passing the Pang La Pass, one of the highest passes in Tibet at 5050m, we can admire all of the five highest peaks in the world, then arrive at Rongpuk Monastery for the overnight at the foot of Everest Mountains.
Breakfast is at the hotel.
Overnight at Dorm or Big Tent (very limited condition of accommodation)

Day 6:

EVEREST BASE CAMP / SHIGATSE (340 KM)
As the highest mountain on Earth and known the world over for those attempting to surmount it and reach the peak at an incredible altitude of 8,848 metres, Mount Everest is one of China’s – if not the – most well-known and iconic natural sites.

In the morning, we can see the sunrise if weather permits at the lodging area. Then we’ll visit the Rongpuk Monastery – the unique highest monastery with nuns and monks living together. Finally, we will drive back to Shigatse.
Overnight at Shigatse Shiga Yangcha Hotel or similar.

Day 7:

SHIGATSE / LHASA (270 KM)
Our exploration today takes us to Shigatse, another holy city positioned on the towering Tibetan plateau.

This is Tibet’s second-largest city and the traditional capital of Tsang province. As we drive in across the plains we will be greeted by the sight of the Potala-lookalike Shigatse Dzong fort, high on a hilltop overlooking the city.

This destination’s main draw is Tashilhunpo Monastery. Since the Mongol sponsorship of the Gelugpa order in the 17th century, this revered building has been the seat of the Panchen Lama, the second most important spiritual figure in Tibetan Buddhism after the Dalai Lama. This is also the largest functioning monastery in Tibet and we get to explore this vast 300,000 sq-m sanctuary, known as the ‘Heap of Glory,’ which contains the Panchen Lama’s Palace and the Kelsang Temple. We will see exquisite Buddhist art on the intricately designed wall murals.

We depart from Shigatse and travel back to Lhasa (journey perhaps by train)
Breakfast is at the hotel.
Overnight at Lhassa Thangka Hotel or similar.

Day 8:

LHASA /NAMTSO LAKE / DUMGXIONG (300 KM)
Drive 6 hours from Lhasa to Lake Namtso, on the way, we’ll see Nyenchen Thanglha (snow mountain ranges) and lots of nomads with yak and sheep grazing nearby.

It is impossible not to be awestruck by the beauty of Tibet’s largest lake, which is why it is so apt that the name of Namtso translates to ‘Heavenly Lake’. Sitting at an altitude of 4,718 metres, this azure expanse is also the highest-situated saltwater lake in the world, with almost 2,000 square metres of serene sapphire waters encircled by tranquil shores and prayer flag-clad rocky outcrops. The area exudes spirituality which is why it still attracts thousands Tibetan monks on pilgrimage, who can meditate in one of the many caves or experience a ritual cleansing in the waters.

Breakfast is at the hotel.
Overnight at DumgXiong Baima Hotel or similar.

Day 9:

DUMGXIONG / LHASA (180 KM)
After breakfast, we will first visit Chimelong Nunnery (Phyirmil Lung Nunnery). Roam over the peaceful small nunnery and get an idea of different Buddhist studies in Tiber, you may also spot a sky burial site (Tibet funeral site) in distance.

Sky burial is a funeral practice commonly seen in Tibet. The corpse will be disposed of and later devoured by vultures. In Tibetan Buddhism, sky burial is believed to represent their wished to go to heaven. Only family members of the deceased can attend the funeral.

Then we can go to Tsurphu Monastery, the seat of the Karmapa branch of the Kagyupa order of Tibetan Buddhism. Here you can learn more about the “Black Hats”, the Karma Kagyupa school of Tibetan Buddhism. In the summertime (June to September), we could also go for a “Linka outing” (Tibetan-style picnic) in the small village at the foot of the hill of Tsurphu Monastery.
Overnight at Lhassa Thangka Hotel or similar.

Day 10:

LHASA DEPARTURE
We transfer to Lhasa Airport for our onward flight.
