Program details

Milan is one of a select group of cities where a cemetery is a must-see while in town. This extraordinary excursion to the Cimitero Monumentale (Monumental Cemetery) takes you to the final resting place of thousands of souls among who are such celebrated figures as Eva Peron and composer Giuseppe Verdi. As such, this massive graveyard is one of the city’s most unusual tourist attractions.

The Cimitero Monumentale (Monumental Cemetery) is considered a real open-air museum of funerary art. Great Italian sculptors such as Arnaldo Pomodoro and Medardo Rosso designed the tombs, funerary shrines and mausoleums. Visit the memorial chapel, considered a veritable Pantheon of illustrious men and the most significant burials.

You’ll find an A to Z of VIPs buried here, ranging from former Fomula 1 champion Alberto Ascari to pianist Vladimir Horovitz. Other important historic figures buried at the cemetery include Evita Peron, who was interred under a false name for the first 16 years, and Herbert Kilpin the English founder of AC Milan football club. Few other cemeteries in the world can boast of such a truly eclectic collection of dead celebrities.

This quiet and peaceful allows you to look back at some of the most important milestones in the city’s history through the tombs of the most famous Milanese of the last two centuries. There is also a section for non-Catholics, where Hermann Einstein, the father of physicist Albert is buried.
