The epic clash between the superpowers of Persia and Greece was a momentous victory for the outnumbered Greeks and the legends derived from the encounter have endured the millennia. Explore the historic battle fields, admire the dam at Lake Marathon and visit the Marathon race museum to witness over 3,000 exhibits recording the history of the race from 1896 to the present day.


Now a tranquil Grecian plain, 2,500 years ago the fields of marathon hosted a pivotal moment in European history as the blood of 35,000 soldiers poured onto the ground. Following the Greek victory, Philippides’ 42.2km dash from Marathon to Athens also gave birth to the most challenging race in sport. The tour begins in Athens as you trace his route in reverse, stopping to see the impressively engineered dam at Lake Marathon. Proceed to the battlefields themselves as your expert local guide takes you back in time to the frontline of this titanic clash. Take in the beauty of the Grecian countryside before heading to the Marathon Museum to browse historic artefacts.


Walk in the shoes of the most famous marathon runners as you visit the famous Marathon Race Museum that hosts over than 3,100 exhibits recording the history of the Marathon race from 1896 to today. Among the exhibits you can see cups, medals and numerous relics of the legendary Marathon road race athlete Stelios Kyriakides, winner of the Boston Marathon in 1946.
