Program details

Uncover the spiritual side of Chiang Mai with visits to the city’s most important temples. This half-day tour will take you to the striking Wat Suan Dok, the historic Wat Phra Singh, the heavenly Wat Jedyod, the indestructible Wat Chedi Luang’s and the ancient Wat Chiang Mun.

Wat Suan Dok has a collection of gleaming white chedi, which are Buddhist mausoleums. The white spires contrast dramatically with the mountains in the background making the spot a favourite among photographers. The ashes of Chiang Mai’s royal families are interred here.

Admire at the 14th century Wat Phra Singh, a stellar example of Lanna architecture displayed in high-pitch, three-tier roofs and elaborate carved wood gables. This temple is revered for its Buddha statue. The Phra Singh, which gives the temple its name, is based on a lion Buddha yet has many human characteristics.

Also visit Wat Jedyod, the temple of seven spires, and Wat Chedi Luang, which remains a sacred spot despite suffering damage during an earthquake. Its spire collapsed in a 1545 tremour yet its destruction seems to have amplified its strength and beauty as a spot for pilgrims. Several Buddha shrines are contained in the ruined brick mausoleum.

Chiang Mai’s oldest temple is another must-see. Built in 1297, Wat Chiang Mun houses two sacred and ancient Buddha statues. Be amazed by the Chang Lom chedi, known as the elephant chedi. This mausoleum is rimmed by brick-and-stucco elephants that appear to be supporting on their backs the structure’s upper floors.
