Program details

Head off the beaten track to discover some of Australia’s most impressive attractions while taking in picturesque hamlets and awe-inspiring landscapes. Your day begins with the drive east over the Darling Ranges to York for morning tea by the Avon River. York is Western Australia's first inland town, a historic and charming rural town rich in Victorian and Federation buildings. Continue on out east touring through the wheat belt region, seeing sheep and cattle farms, salt lakes, granite rock outcrops, a hint of what is to come when we arrive at Hyden, the community closest to the famous Wave Rock.

The name gives an idea of what to expect with this geological marvel having the shape of a breaking wave with a clearly defined arch. Wave Rock rises 15 metres above the ground and is 110 metre long; it looks like a giant wave about to break. Geologists believe the original formation was sculptured and coloured by chemicals over 2,700 million years to take on its wave-like character. We visit Hippo's Yawn Cave (the name comes from the rock's resemblance to a yawning hippo) and after lunch we take a look at the Humps, a gnamma (panhole) in the granite rocks that was used by the Aborigines when passing through the area. We then stop over at Mulka's cave, the name Mulka comes from an Aboriginal legend associated with the cave. This is a fascinating day exploring geologic features in the Outback and listening to the Aboriginal legends of the area.
