Uncover the horrors of the Great War with this comprehensive tour of the scars this terrible conflict has left in the area around Brussels. As the tour begins, leave the Belgian capital behind as you head towards the German Military Cemetery of Vladslo – the Kathe Kollwitz sculptures of the ‘Grieving Parents’ are very moving.
Continue to the small city of Diksmuide, where you will visit the terrifying Trench of Death, see the ominous Gate of Peace and the stunning Ijzertower. By way of Peace Mill, Houthulst and the Canadian Monument in St Julien, travel to in Passchendaele/Langemark, the ghostly site where countless men fell in battle. After that, recover energy with a bread meal in an old cheese factory.
The next stop if the famous Commonwealth cemetery of Tyne Cot. Here, no less than 35,000 men lie buried. Carry on towards Essex Farm, a former field hospital where John McCrae wrote his famous poem, In Flanders Fields. Then, near Ypres, visit on Cloth Hall the museum of In Flanders Fields, which is a Unesco World Heritage Site.
Along Hell Fire Corner, arrive at Hill 60, renowned for its tunnelling war and the Caterpillar Crater, which you will briefly visit. Back in Ypres, enjoy a hearty dinner.
Finally, at 8 pm, witness the haunting Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate before returning to Brussels.
