Program details

Come and discover the fascinating district of Kaiping, an area rich in history and famous for the diaolou - fortified multi-storey towers – that dot the landscape. Approximately 1,800 of these striking edifices still remain standing and this tour will introduce you to some of the most remarkable.

Kaiping, which is 140km from Guangzhou, is located in the southwestern part of the Pearl River Delta. The emblematic diaolou for which the region is renowned were originally built as watchtowers to provide protection against marauding bandits and were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.

Your tour starts with a visit to the towers in the village of Zili, located in the middle of a flat, irrigated plain. Here there are nine distinctive towers and you will be given ample time to explore.
After lunch at a local Chinese restaurant the tour continues with a visit to Liyuan Garden. Built by a Chinese American in the 1920s, this spectacular garden covers an area of over 11,000 square metres and features a harmonious blend of traditional Chinese gardening, water landscaping and Western architecture.

The final port of call is Chi Kan old town, where the striking traditional architecture provides an irresistible attraction for television and movie directors looking for an authentic backdrop against which to shoot their films. This day-long tour gives a perfect introduction to the many facets of a fascinating corner of Guangdong.
