Program details

Explore the remarkable city of Foshan, renowned for its centuries-old porcelain industry and home to a diverse collection of important religious and historical sites. Foshan is the third largest city in Guangdong province and has traditionally been associated with its significant ceramics industry.

The tour begins at Foshan Ancestral Temple, a striking Taoist temple with a long history, having been first been built in the Song dynasty during the reign of Emperor Zhezong (1078-1085). The temple still houses the city’s guardian, where it has stood for hundreds of years. Lunch at a local Chinese restaurant is followed by a visit to the Foshan Folk Art Institute, which was set up by the government in 1956 with the aim of researching and fostering traditional crafts. A wide variety of folk arts and crafts is on display, including paper cutting, calligraphy and lantern making.

Our final port of call is the Nan Feng Ancient Kiln. Tracing its origins back to the Ming dynasty this remarkable kiln has been firing continuously for over 500 years and is still going strong. Nowadays it forms the hub of a thriving ceramics centre, featuring a small village with a host of artisan workshops and stalls. Soak of the atmosphere of this bustling place and browse to your heart’s content.
A fantastic introduction to the constantly surprising city of Foshan, taking in some of its top ‘must-see’ sites and destinations.
