Program details

Be mesmerised by the beauty of Borobudur, one of the greatest Buddhist monuments in the world. This Unesco World Heritage Site boasts no fewer than 432 statues of the Lord Buddha on a five-level pyramid. Then round off this fascinating tour by seeing the two smaller temples of Pawon and Mendut.

Sitting serenely upon a hilltop encircled by active volcanoes at the centre of the lush tropical island of Java, you will be amazed by the sheer scale and detail of its construction. Completed in around 825AD, the temple's design was influenced by the gupta style of India and illustrates both Buddhist and Hindu styles.

As you climb the complex terrace by terrace your guide will reveal Borobudur’s unique story of how it lay abandoned under layers of volcanic ash for centuries before its restoration. The unusual design depicts three ‘worlds’: the bottom level defines the world of desires, the second level a transitional sphere or 'world of forms' and finally, the third level ascension to the sphere of the gods. When you reach the top you will be astonished by magnificent panoramas of the surrounding valley.

Continues to the Pawon Temple, set amid a typical Javanese village, and the Mendut temple with its impressive 3-metre monolith statues of Buddha Cakyamuni. All three temples are situated on a straight line, with Borobudur at the centre, which, coupled with their similar architecture, can surely be no accident. Be inspired by Indonesia’s jewel in the crown and embrace the rich cultural heritage of this unmissable tourist destination.
