Visit the site of one of the bloodiest battles in the American Civil War in this tour from Nashville to Franklin, where in November 1864, more than 50,000 soldiers from Union and Confederate armies fought each other without mercy. The (second) Battle of Franklin has gone down in history as one of the greatest disasters suffered by the South, with thousands killed, wounded or captured.

An expert local guide will recount how events unfolded during this horrific battle as you visit the sites of Lotz House, Carter House and Carnton Plantation. You’ll also have some to explore the charming city of Franklin.

Begin with a visit to Carter House, the central position of the Union forces during the battle. The brickwork of the house and outbuildings is still riddled with thousands of bullet holes. At nearby Lotz House, used as a field hospital after the battle, you’ll be able to see the bloodstains on the floor and walls, bringing back the sheer horror of a battle that saw almost 10,000 casualties.

Then visit Franklin itself, where you can browse the many shops, find some traditional southern food (not included) and stroll the historic downtown. Afterwards, head to the Carnton Plantation, a beautiful pre-war estate, which is now the site of the largest Confederate cemetery. Your guide will provide you with more fascinating historical details about this terrible battle and its aftermath as you tour the poignant rows of graves.
