Program details

Experience a fascinating and poignant day as you sail to the beautiful island of Spinalonga, often called the “island of tears” due to its past as a leper colony. For over fifty years it was home to hundreds of lepers who were forbidden to leave yet attempted to live normal lives. Explore the shops, hospital and graveyard before sailing to Kolokitha Island to moor at an idyllic beach. Relax, swim or snorkel whilst the crew prepares a delicious barbecue lunch and drinks.

This tour combines the stunning natural beauty of the Greek Mediterranean islands with their intriguing and occasionally dark history. Set sail from Elounda and land at Spinalonga to be guided around the remains of the leper colony, which was established within the walls of a huge Venetian fortress. Learn the harrowing history of the colony that existed between 1903 and 1957 as you tour the settlement’s remains.

The forget about events of the past and focus on enjoying the Greek islands in the present, something that is very easy to do as you head to Kolokitha Island. The boat will stop at a small beach with crystal blue waters where you can stretch out in the sun, paddle in the water or dive deeper to snorkel with the colourful fish that inhabit these waters. Tuck into a delicious barbecue lunch back on board and sip on a tasty drink as you relax before returning to Elounda after a memorable day.
