Program details

Experience the natural beauty and rich history of the Vienna Woods. Visit the spectacular Liechtenstein Castle, the otherworldly Seegrotte for a romantic boat trip on the largest underground lake in Europe and Heiligenkreuz, the Cistercian monastery steeped in history. Continue to drive through the stunning Austrian countryside through the magical Helenental to Mayerling, Baden and Gumpoldskirchen, all bursting with history and culture.

Set in the foothills of the Northern Limestone Alps, the Vienna Woods are a haven of tranquility and scenic landscapes just outside of the Austrian capital. They are also home to some of Austria’s finest architecture and the setting for some of the country’s most significant events. Your guided tour begins at Liechtenstein castle, straight out of the page of a fairytale. Then proceed to the Seegrotte, a remarkable natural cave formation that is home to the largest underground lake in Europe. Sail through the lake and marvel at the ethereal green and blue colours that form in this subterranean environment.

Admire Höldrichsmühle, where Schubert once composed his music and Heiligenkreuz, the Cistercian monastery that became the basis for the recivilisation of the Vienna area. Proceed to Mayerling, where Crown Prince Rudolf came to a tragic end with his lover, Mary Vetsera and Baden, which was a spa resort as early as the time of the Romans. End this spectacular tour with a drive along the Wine Road to Gumpoldskirchen, with its world-renowned vineyards and stunning views over the city of Vienna.
