A ringside seat awaits you to see Thai boxing, the country’s national sport. Watch as the boxers engage in a battle of wits, using nearly every part of their body. This ruthless combat is called Muay Thai, ‘the art of eight limbs,’ since both boxers are able to make contact through punches, kicks, elbow and knee strikes.

This full-contact nature of the sport seems to clash with the reputation of Thais as gentle and peaceful. Theories abound about its origins but many experts believe the Thai people developed this hand-to-hand combat skill to battle constant invaders. King Naresuan in the 16th century had a keen interest in Muay Thai as a sport and battlefield tactic. He trained his own soldiers in this martial art and its popularity soared.

Soon, Thai people from all walks of life were training in Muay Thai or watching bouts during festivals and even outside temples. However, it remained dangerous since the boxers fought with only hemp bound around their fists and forearms. Occasional deaths prompted the use of boxing gloves, rings and referees in the early 20th century. international rules now govern the sport.

You will have the rare opportiunity to see the incredible jostling of Thai boxers who proudly train in this ancient martial art and travel the country to show off their skills. From your ringside seat you can observe first-hand the flexibility, strategy and sheer force of these fearless warriors. The match is a must-see for sports, culture and history aficionados.
