Program details

Enjoy a day of history with this two-headed tour, first to the extraordinary Archaeological Museum of Istanbul, and then to the beautiful remains of the ancient city of Galata.

The Council of Europe bestowed this museum with the museum of the year prize for its vast array of different epochs that all contributed to develop European history. See up close the famous Sarcophagus of Alexander the Great and a wonderful collection of objects from the Archaic, Hellenistic, Classical and Roman periods. The New Building, which opened its doors to the general public in 1998, contains exhibitions of Trojan and Anatolian culture, plus a section on the city of Istanbul. Another building contains artworks from Mesopotamia and millenary artefacts. Delve into the fascinating history of Turkey’s civilisations: Sumerians, Hittites, Arcadians, Babylonians… All converge under this roof.

After setting the scene by learning about Turkey’s background, it is time to see history in a different entourage. Visit the magnificent ruins of Galata. Located on the slopes near the beautiful Golden Horn, a river that branches out of the Bosphorus, this former orchard adopted the name of Galata when the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius II erected a huge fortress in this area. Enjoy wandering dreamingly around the magnificent Galata Tower and the manifold constructions that still remain on these slopes, from the bygone days of the Byzantine Empire; churches, synagogues, hospitals, banks and schools. Your guide will ever be telling you the incredible stories behind these buildings, seemingly bringing their ghosts back to life.
