The lovingly carved woodwork made here is a long and important tradition of Zapotecan culture, and one most eloquently expressed in the creation of the famous Alebrijes. The Alebrijes are surreal and magical hand carved pieces, a combination of woodwork and paper craft. A quintessential Mexican favourite, the Alebrijes depict fantastical, bright and colourful creatures that are brought to life by the imagination.

Following your journey into the dreams of Arrazola’s artisans, continue to Cuilapam de Guerrerom, a pretty former monastery nestled amid Oaxaca’s diverse Central Valleys. Wander beneath it towering archways and proud pillars, and hear its fascinating history, as a structure that was started in the XVI century but was never completed.

No tour of this delightful region would be complete without a visit to a local artisan market. It is with this in mind that you make your way to the village of Zaachila, founded around the 13th century AD and named after the Zapotec ruler, Zaachila Yoo. It is now home to a thriving and varied market and a rich archaeological zone, both of which will keep you happily enthralled as you discover the beating heart of Oaxaca.
