Program details

Come and discover the ruins of northern Cyprus, both ancient and modern, with this exclusive full-day guided tour of the ghost town of Famagusta and the remains of the classical kingdom of Salamis.

The ruins of the ancient Roman city of Salamis are among the most important archaeological sites in Cyprus and cover an impressive location, extending along the sea shore with a stunning Mediterranean backdrop. Your knowledgeable local guide will show you around the main excavations, including the impressive open-air amphitheatre, the gymnasium, the baths and the theatre. They have all undergone a painstaking restoration process.

We will then continue our journey with a stop at the old city of Famagusta, where time has literally stood still since the Turkish invasion of 1974. The old city is surrounded by one of the best-preserved Venetian fortifications in the eastern Mediterranean. There are plenty of medieval and renaissance buildings to visit, many of them still bearing the scars of the Ottoman siege of 1571. We will visit the citadel, also known as Othello’s Tower, the Cathedral of St Nicholas (converted to a mosque after the Ottoman conquest) and the Church of St George, famed for its colourful frescoes. Then take a stroll around the old town, where there is something of interest in almost every corner. There’s also plenty of free time for you to relax, soak up the sun or enjoy a swim in the Med or even to stare across the fence at the seafront district of Varosha, which has been cordoned off and abandoned.
