Program details

The less trodden paths of the north and west of Rhodes offer an enticing introduction to the myths and history of this fascinating island. From the Filerimos Cross and Monastery, which is known for its far-reaching views across the island, to one of the best archaeological sites at ancient Kamiros, with its excavated amphitheatre, make sure you have your camera at the ready. We will wind our way up densely wooded hills, laden with cypresses on our way to the monastery, which is located on the slopes of Filerimos (‘lover of solitude’) Hill by the ruins of an ancient acropolis. Centuries ago, there was a fortress on the hill which, over time, became a monastery dedicated to the Virgn Mary. In front of the church are the ruins of ancient temples of Zeus (the ‘father of the gods’) and Athena (the goddess of wisdom, courage, justice and culture among others). You can then walk up the stone staircase leading to the enormous cross. The effort is worth it, for if offers outstanding views over Ialissos Bay. At Kamiros, there will be time to admire the amphitheatre, which has been meticulously excavated since the 19th century. Nearby is Kritinia, a village dominated by the imposing ruins of a Venetian castle. This part of the island is less touristy so it offers a great opportunity for visitors to get a feel for what Rhodes is really like and also how it has changed since the advent of modern tourism. A taste of the best bits all in one day.
