Program details

Stretching from the outskirts of Antigua and stretching to the Mexican border, Guatemala’s Western Highlands are a treat for the senses. The region is decorated with quaint and colourful mountain villages, highland lakes and pine forests, and is largely populated by the Mayan indigenous people. This is the place of dreams, and this tour will take you there.

After taking the scenic road to the Western Highlands, rub elbows with the locals and take a public boat across the Lake Atitlan to Santiago. Lake Atitlan is a feast for the eyes: clear calm waters that reflect the spectacular mountain range bordering the lake, it is the closest you’ll find to complete bliss. Admire the vibrant colours and local flavour of Santiago where many local people still live the traditional Mayan lifestyle. Women weave and wear huipiles (tunics) that are embroidered with brilliantly coloured birds and flowers, and seeing their spectacular dress is a highlight on its own. Then head to the lake village of Panajachel where you have time to have lunch and explore its Kakchiquel roots. A village of historical significance, it witnessed the final battle between the Spanish and their Kakchiquel allies against the Tzujiles, and is also a settlement point for Franciscan missionaries who founded the nearby convent.

Escape the hustle and bustle of Guatemala City and don’t miss out on some of the most spectacular scenery that Guatemala has to offer. Witness real-life Mayan culture that you normally only read about and take away picture postcard photos of this bewitching part of the world.
