Program details

Come and discover Luzhi, one of the best-preserved historic towns in the whole of China, which in 2004 was granted a UNESCO Township Preservation Award in recognition of its remarkably unspoiled state. Luzhi, formerly known as Puli, is an ancient water town criss-crossed by rivers and canals with a history dating back more than 2,500 years. It is famed for its simple aesthetic charm, its natural beauty, for its numerous stone bridges and its peaceful riverbank streets.

A chance to enjoy this tranquil atmosphere is followed by a visit to the Ye Shengtao Memorial Hall. Ye Shengtao was a prominent author and educator in China who had a significant impact on the improvement of modern Chinese language education and the Memorial Hall was built to commemorate him on the site of the former school where he once worked. Our next port of call will be the Wansheng Rice Store. Dating back to 1910, when it was originally a rice mill and shop, it now serves as the rice distribution centre for Luzhi and nearby towns. A curious range of antique agricultural implements is on display.

One of Luzhi’s main attractions is the distinctive traditional costume worn by the local women, including colourful kerchiefs and embroidered shoes. A visit to the Costumes Museum of Riverside Town Women is the perfect way to understand the meaning behind the different designs and the history of the costumes. Lunch at local restaurant is included in the tour.
This day-long tour of the photogenic water town of Luzhi promises to be both fascinating and memorable.
