Program details

Discover the authentic experience of exploring prehistoric rock art with this tour of the archaeologically important Walichu Caves, located in a spectacularly beautiful part of Argentina. Sitting on the shore of Lago Argentino, Punto Walichu enjoys an unbeatable position that will remain lodged in your mind for years to come.

Seven kilometres away from the town of El Calafate, gateway to the Glaciares National Park, you will find an archaeological site of great significance where the earliest rock paintings in the province of Santa Cruz were discovered. The rock art at the Wiluchu Caves has been carefully restored, where needed, using the same ancient techniques of the original artists to give modern-day visitors an unparalleled insight into the lives of these prehistoric tribes of hunter-gatherers. It was Francisco Pascasio Moreno, the renowned pioneer explorer of Patagonia, who first drew attention to the remarkable cave paintings to be found at Punto Walichu and since then thousands of people have been drawn to marvel at these early signs of man’s creative expression. The tour includes a 500 metre walk in the company of an expert guide who informs visitors about the significance of the paintings and is a mine of information not only on the local pre-tehuelche culture, but also on tehuelche history and the geological formations in the vicinity.

The tour concludes with the chance to enjoy a cup of tea, chocolate or coffee with a selection of delicious cakes. In all it promises to be a memorable tour that will give you a unique insight into a now vanished world.
