Program details

Learn all about beautiful El Calafate and its history with this comprehensive tour of the city’s most important landmarks. Throughout the trip, your eloquent tour guide will tell you all about the fascinating historic events that took place here, from as far back as the origin of the Andes. Visit the homes of the first settlers and then head to Walichu, where, after a leisurely stroll along the Argentino Lake, you will be able to see original rock paintings. Discover in-depth details about the culture of the region’s original inhabitants, the pre-Tehuelche people.

Later on, make a stop at the Centre of Historical Interpretation of El Calafate, a must stop in the trip. This whole didactic experience is thought out to shed light on the history of the southern Patagonia. Timelines, illustrated plates, photos, graphics and a great many exhibitions of ancient objects, tools and replicas help immerse you into the bygone days of the Patagonia’s early years. Also a choice of sonorous histories will accompany you through fourteen thousand years of human and environmental history.

The history of Patagonia’s people is deeply entwined with the region’s geography. Study the glacier processes and the ecological transformations of the Pleistocene that lead up to the genesis and consolidation of the Tehuelche culture, leading to the inevitable drama of human history: the sheep production, the labour conflict and the Patagonian strikes with their tragic endings. The exhibition ends with the origins of El Calafate.
