This is an unusual tour in the Salta region of northern Argentina that includes geological curiosities, breathtaking scenery and some mouth-watering wine.

Our journey departs from Salta and heads south along Route 68 through the striking Lerma valley and its historic towns. The road then takes us to the extraordinary Quebrada de las Conchas (‘Gorge of Shells’), where wind and water erosion have combined to carve out some spectacular shapes in the rocks. Among the somewhat fanciful names that have been dreamt up to try to capture these forms are the Amphitheatre, the Devil’s Throat, the Toad and the Castle, but none of them truly convey the impressive grandeur of the actual rocks.

The next port of call is the town of Cafayate, centre of one of the most important wine-producing areas in the region and home of a celebrated wine known as Torrontes. The unique climate and soil found in the region contribute to the special properties of its wines, and there will be plenty of opportunities to visit some of the many wineries in the town to sample them for yourself. After lunch we return to Salta through the Quebrada de las Conchas and the Lerma Valley.
