Program details

A remarkable day trip from Salta, this tour takes in the extraordinary sight of the Salinas Grandes salt desert and the enchanting village of Purmamarca.

Leaving from Salta we first head towards the famous ruins at Tastil, a pre-Inca archaeological site, before arriving in the mineral-rich town of San Antonio de los Cobres. After a two-hour stop for lunch and a short visit to the town we continue the tour on Route 40, entering one of the most arid regions in Argentina. Crossing into the province of Jujuy we reach the Salinas Grandes (‘Great Salt Flats’), a vast salt desert covering approximately 6,000 square kilometres. These immense expanses of white shiny salt, stretching away as far as the eye can see in all directions, possess both an impressive grandeur and eerie beauty, and demand to be photographed. Back on the road, we travel down the Lípan Cliff and on to Purmamarca, a typical village of the Humahuaca Gorge with its celebrated Hill of Seven Colours and its charming cottages. The tour returns to Salta after a brief visit to San Salvador de Jujuy.

The tour lasts all day and is led by a knowledgeable guide. Visitors are recommended to wear light clothes, sunscreen, a hat and comfortable walking shoes.
