Being stuck far away in the north of Argentina has saved Salta from many of the ravages of progress and endowed the city with a fascinating colonial and Belle Époque heritage that has made it one of the country’s most beautiful cities as this tour reveals. Come along and explore this shimmering white settlement in the eastern Andes that is known locally as La Linda, ‘the beautiful’.

Discover the neo-classical cathedral, which dates from 1855 and is famed for being the final resting place of General Güemes, a revered national hero. Visit the former City Hall, which now houses a history museum displaying exhibitions of sacred art (Salta is located at the southernmost end of what was the Inca Empire) and rooms devoted to the city’s leading families. Within easy walking distance are the impressive San Francisco Church and San Bernardo Convent and the striking monument to General Güemes.

Rising imposingly in the east is San Bernardo hill where visitors will be able to enjoy awe-inspiring panoramic views of the entire city and the valley beyond. This is followed by visits to the Battle of Salta Monument - commemorating the defence of the city during the War of Independence - the attractive 20 Febrero Park and a favourite summertime neighbourhood on the outskirts of the city called San Lorenzo, famous for its subtropical microclimate. The tour ends with a visit to a craft market where skilled artisans from all over the province come to display their wares.
