Toledo is located in an impressive location on a rock in a bend of the River Tagus. This old town was an important cultural centre for Muslims, Jews and Christians in the early Middle Ages and there's plenty to see including the impressive Gothic Cathedral, atmospheric narrow cobbled streets and an incredible variety of buildings in Arabic, Mudejar, Gothic and Renaissance styles. You shouldn't miss the chance to see El Greco's stunning Burial of the Count of Orgaz – considered by some to be the most beautifully crafted religious painting of all time – in the Church of Santo Tome, the artist’s parish church.

Explore Santa Maria la Blanca, the oldest standing synagogue in Europe and the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes, which was founded by the Catholic monarchs who united Spain in the 15th century. Learn about the famous technique of Damascining in which precious metals are encrusted into steel.
