Live and feel like a monarch with a visit to the sumptuous Royal Palace of Aranjuez. This stunning country retreat south of the capital was begun by Philip II as his spring palace and incorporates a planned town, beautifully landscaped gardens and orchards, lagoons, a canal and rivers, woods and moors. So special are the gardens, in fact, that they inspired one of the world’s best-loved concertos.
The Royal Palace of Aranjuez is the lesser known of the two vast palace complexes begun by Philip II, the other being El Escorial, but is also a Unesco World Heritage Site like its peer. It is situated 50km south of Madrid in the planned town of Aranjuez, which is on the confluence of the rivers Tagus and Jarama.
Explore the luxurious baroque palace during this five-hour guided tour while learning snippets of fascinating information about their origins. Discover the Throne Room of Isabel II; admire the delicate Porcelain Room, the Alhambra-inspired Smoking Room and the Hall of Mirrors. Stroll around the peaceful gardens, whose beauty inspired Joaquin Rodrigo to compose his haunting Concierto de Aranjuez. Behold the brilliant water features, the Fountain of Narcissus and the Chinese Kiosks of the Prices’ Gardens.
Visit the Museum of Royal Feluccas and see the fascinating exhibition of barges and other river craft used by royals to sail down the Tagus, among which is a gondola that once belonged to Philip II as well as many other boats from different periods of history.
